With our "Technique of the Week" segments we cover the exact technique used in many of the recent MMA fights you've watched. We believe it's important to understand the setups, technique, transitions and approaches used by fighters during a fight. While this provides you a better understanding of what's actually happening in the ring/cage at any given moment, we believe it's equally important that you're given some insight into the training techniques used by many MMA or BJJ fighters as they prepare for competition. With that said, we provide you our first "Fight Fitness" segment with the help of our great friends Larry Sarjeant and Ryan Herzog, of Anytime Fitness in Centennial, CO.
Having worked with many fighters and competitors, these guys are able to take their understanding of the human body and to apply their knowledge to the specific needs of combat sports athletes.
We look forward to many beneficial segments from these guys. If you have any requests related to something you need help with, please let us know in our "Comments" section.
Thanks and Good Luck! To watch this week's segment, "Read More".....
As most of you saw at UFC 106, Josh Koscheck submitted Anthony "Rumble" Johnson with a rear-naked choke to win not only his fight but Submission of the Night, as well. There were some awesome submissions from Kendall Grove (transition from arm-bar to triangle, from guard) and George Sotiropoulos (arm-bar using unique technique to free up arm). Regardless, Dana White made his decision and this was the winner.
"Rumble" Johnson is a monster of a welterweight but his ground game has been suspect. It's obvious after this submission loss that it needs a lot of work. In this week's special Thanksgiving Day episode, Professor Correa demonstrates how to correctly defend the rear-naked choke in a similar situation.
Watch, enjoy and learn. Also, go easy on the turkey dinner. Though this will help you escape a rear-naked choke, there's no helping you if you're gagging on a drumstick. You're on your own.
Despite having a premier event this weekend, Strikeforce's CBS debut featuring Fedor Emelianenko, the card failed to produce any submission finishes of note. Strikeforce's other, smaller event, Showtime Challenger Series which aired Friday evening, did produce a submission that we rarely see in mixed martial arts; the omoplata.
Busy will cover the omoplata in this week's episode focusing on the details that allow you to finish the submission. Hope you enjoy. "Read More"
We know you're all fans of MMA, but do all of you train in some aspect of the sport? Whether it be Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing or wrestling, we believe everyone should train in at least one of these disciplines. This helps to not only increase your knowledge of the sport but to increase your overall fitness and well-being. With that said, we present to you our first installment of an episode we'll be presenting weekly; UltimateFightSource's Technique of the Week by Mario "Busy" Correa.
Professor Correa has a world-class, Jiu-jitsu game so we'll look to him to help us understand some of the finer details related to take downs, sweeps and submissions that we see in MMA events.
Unfortunately, there was only one submission at UFC 104, a growing and disturbing trend we're noticing at UltimateFightSource. It was a triangle choke finish by Stefan Struve. Since that didn't provide us a lot to work with, Professor Correa will go over the finer details of the submission along with transitions to other submissions.
UltimateFightSource views our Technique section as a collaborative. If you train, and your head instructor has a signature move, punch, kick, take down, etc., we'd like to see it. The only way that happens is for you to submit it to the site. We want your schools and instructors to help us grow this repository of MMA knowledge so it can be shared among all readers.
For those who don't train, maybe this will provide the motivation to help you take the first step towards getting in the gym. As my instructors always tell me, "the hardest part is getting on the mat". Once you're there, everything else is easy....and fun!
