UFC 112 Update

Strong rumors about UFC cards generally start circulating about 3-4 months out from the event. Here is the latest on UFC 112, which will take place April 10th in Abu Dhabi.

-Anderson Silva vs Vitor Belfort is expected to happen and take place on this card. This has become a highly anticipated fight, but I don't see it going much differently than most of Silva's dominating victories.

-BJ Penn vs Gray Maynard or Frankie Edgar. Not to surprising, considering these are the two leading candidates to challenge Penn for his title. I think Maynard would be the better fight, especially since he has been running his mouth about BJ. Of course, Gray has to get past Nate Diaz next Monday night, or this won't happen.

-Matt Hughes vs Renzo Gracie. This has been expected for months now and it should be happening here. Hughes returns to face another Gracie legend. Will it be either fighter's swan song or a return to contention?

If these all happen, it would make for a great show. I fully expect 2010 to be packed with amazing shows, as the MMA landscape is more competitive than ever, with very high stakes. Plus the UFC has to do something with all their stars returning from injury and illness the past few months!

Brock Lesnar's Facebook page has the news.

I seriously doubt if Brock actually maintains his own page, and I take this with a grain of salt, but it doesn't look good for the UFC heavyweight champ.

According to a recent post, Brock has suffered more health problems, presumably related to his intestinal issues. The setback may keep the star out of action for the next year.

I hope this isn't true, but it very possibly is. Best wishes to Brock and we hope for a full recovery for him.

We will give you more information as it becomes available.

Floyd vs Pacman is OFF!
Boxing

Boxing has once again found a way to shoot its self in the foot. According to promoter, Bob Arum, the super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is off for real.

Anyone who knows boxing even a little, knows that this was very likely to happen from the beginning. I was shocked to learn how fast the dream fight came to reality, yet I was still not convinced it would actually happen. This is a loss to all of us fans and basically the last straw for me.

I was raised watching greats like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and the usual suspects. Boxing was a great sport, where the best routinely battled it out and celebrities graced the arenas, dressed in tuxedos and gowns. It truly was a spectacle.

These days, boxing has lost that glamor and much of its appeal in the ring. While it has always had a shady element behind the scenes, today's promoters have brought the seamy side to the forefront. Big matches are few and far between and the sport seems to be losing some of its appeal.

This fight was to be huge. This is the biggest fight the sport has to offer, but amid unfounded steroid accusations by Mayweather's camp and the pursuant litigation by Paquiao, it is off, for now...

Lesnar's Future To Be Clarified This Week?

By now, we all know that UFC Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar, has been out  with an intestinal illness, leaving his future, in and out of the octagon, in question. The champ is apparently suffering from diverticulitis, which can range from requiring minor treatment to being a life threatening disease. Despite the mystery surrounding Lesnar's ailment, it is obvious that he is suffering from a serious  bout with the disease.

This week, Brock returns to the doctor to determine of he is recovering sufficiently, or if he will require further surgery, which would possibly end the ex-wrestler's MMA career.

We wish the champ the best and hope he get's great news from the doc, so he can get back in where he belongs. Check back for updates as news becomes available.

Fedor vs Werdum In the Works
Strikeforce

"The Last Emperor", Fedor Emelianenko, will make his return against BJJ ace, Fabricio Werdum in April on CBS.

Coming off a knockout of Brett Rogers, Fedor will take on the UFC veteran, in what should lead to a fight with Heavyweight Champ, Alistair Overeem. Due to Overeem fighting in K1 and and MMA overseas, Strikeforce has been unable to pair the two. Overeem has one fight left on his K1 contract, then is taking some much deserved time off, before returning to action later in the year.

In the mean time, the shot at the world's number one heavyweight, goes to Werdum. After competing at the 2009 Abu Dhabi grappling tournament, Werdum returned to MMA, defeating Antonio Silva in a close decision. I'm not sure how Werdum can beat Fedor, but I would guess catching him in a devastating submission is the best opportunity, though nobody has accomplished that yet.

Looks like the April card is going to be outstanding!

Pacquiao vs Mayweather at MGM

Reports are surfacing that the highly anticipated super fight between Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and Floyd "Money" Mayweather will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 13th of 2010. Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, wanted to host the fight at his new stadium, but Vegas is the only place for a fight of this magnitude.

This is the biggest fight boxing can put on and is expected to break all-time PPV records. Even UFC President, Dana White, has said that he will not counter program that night and he is extremely excited for the fight.

I can't wait and if you are an MMA fan who denounces boxing, this is a match you should see. It is sure to be action packed and fast paced the entire time.

The problem for boxing, is what to do next. Depending on the results of this card, the only big fight they may have left is a rematch.

Vegas, baby! Vegas!

Mir vs Carwin at UFC 111 For Interim Title?
UFC

Ugggghhhhh. I hate interim titles! I'm getting the bad feeling that Dana White is milking the Brock Lesnar illness for all the drama he can. Why have an interim title fight, if the champ is returning a couple of months later? This is either adding spice to the mix, or Dana knows something about Lesnar that we don't and it isn't good.

The rumor today is, that Frank Mir will take on Shane Carwin March 27 at UFC 111: Jersey Shores. It has been picking up steam in the last few days, with both heavyweights expressing their respect for each other and desire to match up in the Octagon.

I like the fight a lot, just not the interim tag that will likely be applied to it. This would be a big fight for Carwin to add to his resume and a huge test in the style of Brock for Frank Mir. Add this to a card already featuring the welterweight championship and it is looking spectatcular.

The rumored card so far:

Georges St. Pierre vs Dan Hardy UFC Welterweight Championship

Frank Mir vs Shane Carwin UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship

Ricardo Almeida vs Thiago Alves welterweight contender match

Some nice fights, regardless of the interim title.

Brock Lesnar Back In July?
UFC

Of all the talk about Brock Lesnar and his illness, I would estimate about 99% to be unfounded and around 1% to based in reality. Ahhh, but what fun is reality?

Heavy.com has a report that UFC officials have stated they expect him back in July for the company's Massachusetts debut:

"Heavy.com has learned from UFC sources that the company is internally targeting July as a potential return date for Lesnar and that the Lesnar/Carwin bout could headline the UFC's initial foray into Massachusetts. A July date has been secured with the TD Garden in Boston for a card that will serve as the centerpiece of the UFC's summer 2010 schedule."

I hope this is true and that the UFC does NOT force an interim champion on us. It would be good news for Brock's health and for fans everywhere. It does coincide with Brock's trainer, Greg Nelson, making statements to the effect that Lesnar is feeling better and his future looks good. This is very contrary to the statements made by UFC president, Dana White. I hope Dana wasn't just trying to dramatize the situation. I doubt that is the case and more likely he was just taking a worst possible case viewpoint.

GSP Returning in March?
UFC

Expect this type of story to prevalent in the next couple of months, as UFC stars begin returning to the octagon. Injuries and illnesses have kept many big names from fighting in late 2009, so speculation is sure to go wild as they come back.

It appears that welterweight champ, Georges St. Pierre, will make his return to the UFC in March. The card is targeted for New Jersey and would be headlined by GSP vs Dan Hardy.

It will be good to see the face of the new UFC get back in there and get to fighting. Hardy will get his title shot after beating Mike Swick earlier this month.

Personally, I would much rather see fresh faces getting title fights, rather than facing each other and getting knocked out of contention.

Machida vs Shogun 2 is Coming Soon!

The rematch we all want is on the way! Yahoo Sports twittered that Dana White told them the fight will headline a May 1st, 2010 card in Montreal.

This will be a great fight in an amazing city. I expect the rematch to go much like the first fight with an added sense of urgency to finish the fight before a decision is made by the judges!

Does it stink that we have to wait 6 months? Absolutely, but it gives the fighters time to heal, rest and fully prepare for an epic battle.

Check back for updates as the card is announced and matches made!
