Shields vs Hendo in April
Written by Mark Long

Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker, announced that newly signed Dan Henderson, will take on Jake Shields on the April telecast to air on CBS. Henderson makes his Strikeforce debut in a fight for Shields' middleweight championship belt.

Henderson last fought in the UFC, knocking out Micheal Bisping, after his stint as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter: USA vs UK. Despite his popularity coming off the KO, Henderson's contract demands forced the UFC to pass, allowing Strikeforce to add a familiar face to its roster.

Shields is coming off of a victory over Jason "Mayhem" Miller, in which he controlled the fight on the ground in a very lackluster style, earning the ire of many fans. It will be interesting to see if he can do the same to Henderson, a former Olympic wrestler. If hendo can keep it standing, he very well may walk away with the belt.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather at MGM

Reports are surfacing that the highly anticipated super fight between Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and Floyd "Money" Mayweather will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 13th of 2010. Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, wanted to host the fight at his new stadium, but Vegas is the only place for a fight of this magnitude.

This is the biggest fight boxing can put on and is expected to break all-time PPV records. Even UFC President, Dana White, has said that he will not counter program that night and he is extremely excited for the fight.

I can't wait and if you are an MMA fan who denounces boxing, this is a match you should see. It is sure to be action packed and fast paced the entire time.

The problem for boxing, is what to do next. Depending on the results of this card, the only big fight they may have left is a rematch.

Vegas, baby! Vegas!

WEC and Strikeforce Weekend Afterthoughts

Saturday night saw the last two major American MMA events of the year, with Strikeforce and the WEC, going head-to-head. Don't fret, January promises to be yet another busy month, with the UFC returning with 108, the WEC and more Strikeforce!

Let's talk Strikeforce: Evolution first. The card was headlined by Cung Le vs Scott Smith in a middleweight showdown and featured the lightweight title unification between Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson. Also on the card were Jacare vs Matt Lindland and Mo Lawal vs Mike Whitehead.

A lot of talk around the internet, has been about the Strikeforce production value. Sure, it's nice when it is done right, but if you are relying on the announcers to keep you entertained, there is something more wrong than the production. Yes, the announcing team is weak, but hardly incompetent when compared to Joe Rogan, Mike Goldberg and Frank Mir.

My problem is the actual meat of the production. It's like ordering a sandwich and receiving a bunch of lettuce and one thin slice of meat. Yes it's there and it's good, but you should be getting more. What I mean by this, is that they have two fights end in the first round, and we are left with a bunch of extra air time. This is where they should show some under card fights, not leave us with way to much talk between the announcing team. Perhaps, if they cut down on this, people will complain less about the announcers?

Read the rest of my thoughts after the jump!

Sherk OUT of UFC 108!
Written by Mark Long

If the UFC needs a name for 108, it shouldn't be "Cursed". It should be UFC 108: Freakin' Ridiculous! The list of fighters and fights that have come and gone for this card is almost like looking at the UFC's entire roster!

So here's the latest. Main Event participant, Thiago Silva is rumored to be injured but being compensated by the UFC to fight anyways. I'm sure some extra chedda and a guarantee that a loss won't affect his standing, is what has convinced him to tough it out.

The big news, however, is that Tyson Griffin's injury replacement, Sean Sherk, is now OUT of the event. Sherk suffered a nasty cut above his eye and will not have sufficient time to heal and receive medical clearance.

His replacement is none other than UFC veteran, Duane "Bang" Ludwig! Great news for Duane, as he makes his return to the UFC after several years. I know for a fact that he has been working hard towards his return to the promotion and will enter the Octagon ready to put on a show vs Jim Miller.

Din Thomas vs Ricardo Mayorga at Shine Fights

Earlier this year, former boxing champ, Ricardo Mayorga, expressed interest in reviving his fight career with a switch to MMA. Upstart promotion, Shine Fights, stepped in and signed the controversial Nicaraguan, who at 35 years of age, is still relevant to the sport of boxing.

This will mark the first time such a high-profile, close to his prime boxer, has made the jump to serious MMA competition. Known as much for smoking and drinking beer in the ring after his fights, Mayorga will get a tough test in his debut, facing UFC veteran Din Thomas.

Mayorga has faced off with fighters like Shane Mosely, Vernon Forrest, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Fernando Vargas, but Thomas will provide a tough challenge for him.

Expect a lot of trash talk as fight time approaches.

Dan Hornbuckle To Bellator

You may not know Dan Hornbuckle. You should get to know Dan Hornbuckle (yes, click on his name!). This dude is straight nasty in the ring!

Dan has made a name for himself in 2009, fighting in Sengoku and displaying some devastating skills. Now, Bellator FC has signed the tall, lanky, welterweight to fight in its 2010 season tournament.

Having already signed former US Olympic team wrestler and two-time NCAA national champion, Ben Askren and prospect Jacob McClintock for the 170-pound tournament, it is clear the promotion is looking to make an impact on the market.

The winner of the tourney will face off against 2009 champ, Lyman Good at the end of the season.

Stay tuned for dates, locations and air times!
